I try to keep things on my blog and social media channels light and fun. Travel is, usually, a fun experience and I don’t want to bog people down with whatever personal issues I may have going. No one wants to hear about that and it’s frankly boring. But please excuse me one brief and temporary diversion from covering all things unicorn and rainbow related to mourn the loss of this guy, one of my three fur-kids and the best friend that I’ll ever have. Cody sadly lost his battle against cancer, that terrible disease which has claimed far too many of my loved ones. Instead of being overly maudlin I want to instead share an excerpt from a commonly cited piece whose author is unknown. “From time to time people tell me, ‘Lighten up, it’s just a dog.’ If you, too, think it’s “Just a dog,” you will probably understand phrases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.” “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. “Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person. Because of “Just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. For me and folks like me, it’s not “Just a dog.” It’s an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. “Just a dog”brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day. So the next time you hear the phrase “Just a dog,” smile, because they “just don’t understand.”

This has been a week and so I want to end it on a light note, thinking back just a couple of weeks ago when I was floating without a care in the world. Iceland is a strange little island, and I’m not talking about their odd love affair with elves. No, it’s strange in any number of ways but one of the best ways is its geothermal resources. Iceland sits over a rift in the continental plates, resulting in a high number of volcanoes and a landscape that can only be called steamy. In addition to providing much of the energy requirements for the country’s citizens, there are some other fun by-products to this geothermal energy, namely the many thermal baths and spas located around the island. We’re all familiar with The Blue Lagoon, which is no doubt the most famous, but it is just one of many. In small towns you’ll usually find community pools that are thermal, perfect for those chilly winter days. It’s common to spend some time relaxing in the baths, not just to decompress but for the unique combination of minerals floating through the water. While visiting the northern town of Akureyri, I spent some time in one of these thermal lagoons - the Mývatn Nature Baths. Like the Blue Lagoon, the basin for this complex of thermal pools is manmade, using water from a nearby borehole. The water has a temperature of around 130 degrees C, before it’s tempered and made suitable for bathers. The water here is very high in sulfur and also a number of other health-promoting minerals. I wasn’t thinking about any of that though when I visited. No, instead I used the all too rare opportunity to relax and just zoned out in the steaming hot waters. Unlike some other baths, due to the relative isolation of Mývatn, there were only a few other visitors with me that day, creating a nearly private experience. I only spent about an hour there but, believe it or not, it was one of the best hours of my time in Northern Iceland.
